Professor Jih-Sheng (Jason) Lai received the Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1989. In August 1996, he joined the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Currently he is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and the Director of Future Energy Electronics Center. Dr. Lai is an IEEE Fellow. He chaired the IEEE Workshop on Computers in Power Electronics (COMPEL 2000). He was founding chair for 2001 IEEE/DOE Future Energy Challenge. He was General Chair for IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition (APEC-2005) and 2008 NSF Workshop on Power Electronics for Alternate Energy and Distributed Generation Systems. His work brought him several distinctive awards including Technical Achievement Award at Lockheed Martin Award Night in 1995, three IEEE IAS Conference Paper Awards in 1995, 1996 and 2007, one IEEE IECON Best Paper Award in 1997, First Prize Paper Award from IPEC-Niigata in 2005, Best Paper Award from PCC-Nagoya in 2007, First Place Student Team Award from TI Analog Design Competition in 2009, and the Best Paper Award of IEEE Transaction on Industrial Electronic in 2010.
